Holiday season is here! To make gifting easier and more fun, we asked two style experts their tips and adresses to spoil our little ones this year. First up is Duygu Massol, fashion stylist for Women and Kids and mother of Luna. Born in Turkey, she now lives under the Spanish sun in Barcelona where she’s taken us for a session of Holiday shopping.
How did you start as a stylist ? And how did you get to where you are now ?
During my studies, I started working at Marie Claire as an intern. 2 years later, I had become the magazine’s fashion stylist and later on the fashion editor. I’ve also worked for Harper’s Bazaar Magazine before moving to Barcelona, so I didn’t really start with Kids styling. Even though I was also working for Marie Claire Kids back in Istanbul, it’s only when I moved to Barcelona that I started doing Kids styling. I really think Barcelona is Paris for Kids fashion ! When I arrived here, I was fascinated by the world of Kids fashion. I met so many inspiring people and discovered a lot of very interesting brands.
What do you love most about your job?
The creativity, and working with teams of people who often become real friends! I really love working with Kids because they have a free spirit, their imagination and curiosity inspire me a lot.
Did becoming a mother change the way you work?
Yes! My life has completely changed. I want to have energy left when I get back home, so I’m more organized, I’m more careful with timings. I try to finish everything before Luna gets home from day care to be able to focus exclusively on her. From the moment she gets home until bed time, I can’t even check my e-mails.
What do you pay attention to when dressing your own daughter?
The colors and fabrics. I only buy natural fabrics for her skin, and I try to choose colors that are “ungendered”. I don’t want to create a little princess. She’s only a kid so I want her to be free in her clothes.
What are your favorite trends for kids this winter? And what do you think of the Bellerose collection?
Knitwear! This winter knitwear is everywhere! I love the colors and contrasts. Bellerose has an elegant and minimalist style with natural fabrics. I love good basics with a twist, like leggings with contrast stripes on the side. Colors and soft knits!
When did you arrive in Barcelona ? What brought you there and what do you love about your daily life there?
I’ve been living in Barcelona for 6 years. I used to live in Istanbul and I was working a lot. Then I met the love of my life during a holiday trip with my friends in Barcelona. After one year spent in between the two cities, we decided to settle here. I left everything behind and moved to Barcelona. In a big city like Istanbul, life goes by so fast you can’t even find the time to think about yourself. That’s what I love in my daily life in Barcelona, the Catalan “slow life” (and the sun of course).
Holiday season is here, what are your best addresses to shop holiday gifts with Luna?
I choose gifts from small designer brands, delicatessen or vintage pieces. I really recommend the home decoration and vintage toys store Gidlööf, or the Italian delicatessen shop Emporio, and natural cosmetics from Cocunat.
And to spoil Luna, what are your favorite shops?
ABRACADABRA is a very cool bookshop for kids. We often go with Luna because we discover many illustrators or authors of children’s books.
Last question but not least : What is your favorite place to take a break during a hard day of holiday shopping in Barcelona?
We love the Cosmo-Gallery Café with Luna. It’s a contemporary café that plays with different artistic activities: music, art displayed on the wall, plates carefully prepared, and most important: a Kids menu with starter, main and dessert! Plus they have a space dedicated to kids, so Luna can play while I’m having a coffee with total peace of mind.
Thanks Duygu for the precious tips!
